With GlavMed gone, who is the King of Pharm Spam?

Last week the anti-spam community was abuzz with the news that Igor Gusev, the CEO of DespMedia, and the man behind GlavMed and SpamItDotBiz had been charged in absentia for running an unregulated internet company. The New York Times had an excellent story on the potential impact on spam.

At the end of this Russia Today article the author suggests "Glavmed partners are preparing to join a new pharmaceutical partnership program if the current one is shut down. Then it will be business as usual."

Where might they be going? Based on what we are seeing in the spam there are a few obvious choices. Most of the spam we have been receiving at the end of last week and through the weekend - more than 20% of our total spam volume - points us to domains that look like this:

Although "US Drugs" has had many look and feels, the thing that ties together this affiliate program is the phone number (800) 998-7978

This phone number is on many different pharma websites, some of which have harder narcotics, such as Vicodin, Percocet, and Hydrocodone such as "buy--viagra.net". These websites are often hosted on a Russian ASN belonging to Galant Ltd, but one of the spam campaigns is currently on Moldovan site AS49544, Complife, which we have seen hosting 1,783 distinct spammed pharmaceutical domains since October 19th on the IP 194.0.221.4 (click for list).

Another of the pharm sites that also uses the telephone (800) 998-7978 looks like this:

This group is currently hosted in Romania, on the IP address 86.55.211.152 (click for list) which has hosted 641 pharma domains since October 26th! prior to that, 2,271 times these domain names were hosted on 86.55.243.102 (click for list).

That leading group is followed by a close second, also almost 20% of our spam volume - for Pharmacy Express:

One of the main locations of this spam campaign's websites has been 188.95.159.61 (click for list) which has hosted 1,060 pharma domains since September 21st! Going back further, there were OEM Software sites and Casino spam sites hosted on the same IP.

Those two prominent spam affiliate programs are followed by a host of also-rans, including:

VirtualJihad against Facebook

On May 20th, a group who claim to be motivated by various "Freedom of Expression" announced that they were holding "Everybody Draw Mohammad Day". As everyone knows by know, on September 30, 2005, a Danish newspaper chose to publish several cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed, including one of the prophet with his turban containing a bomb, which was drawn by Kurt Westergaard. This was the first many Westerners learned of the Islamic tradition that the prophet should never be depicted. The controversy has continued since then, with various papers reprinting the cartoons, and various Islamic nations then banning those papers, or calling for acts of violence against their editors. In January of 2010, Westergaard's home was broken into by an Islamic man who chopped through his door with an axe and desired to kill him with a knife.

The current "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day" craze was not inspired by Westergaard, but rather by death threats against the SouthPark artists, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, who depicted the Prophet Mohammed wearing a bear suit. Seattle-based cartoonist Molly Norris ran a cartoon suggesting that May 20th, be declared "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day" sponsored by "Citizens Against Citizens Against Humor or CACAH", which she has now retracted by scribbling notes on her own cartoon:

Unfortunately for Molly, many folks took her seriously, creating a special website to receive their submitted drawings, and more relevantly to our topic today, they also created a Facebook group, "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day."

The creation of the Facebook Group lead to several national bans of Facebook, including bans by Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the United Arab Eremites. The UAE and Saudi Arabia both made "line item veto" bans blocking only the offending group on Facebook, while the first two banned the entire website. (Update: Pakistan lifted their "blanket" ban on May 31st after Facebook actually censored the offending group.)

Pakistani media reported that "hacking fraternities" were being formed to "take revenge" on the "blasphemous companies". Pakistani residents have reported receiving SMS text messages encouraging them to participate in DDOS attacks. The website "drawmohammed.com" has also been repeatedly defaced by Islamic hackers since this event began.

Perhaps the most outrageous response has been the encouragement to download the attack tool that is being spread to help people DDOS.

The Google Group "Muslims United" was created May 19th and has been actively attacking "offensive" websites. The main banner proclaims the site to be the "Anti-Draw-Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) -DAY", and currently has 1800 messages. Several of these relate to the "virtualjihad.net" website, where the DDOS tool is included.

VirtualJihad.net was registered on May 19th from the website "www.secsupport.com", a reseller for Directi's PublicDomainRegistry.com.

The website is hosted on the IP, 75.126.169.149, hosted by SoftLayer.com, right here in the USA.

The tool has a pull-down menu, allowing the user to choose whether he wants to attack "www.muhammadture.com", "www.drawmuhammadday.com", or "www.facebook.com".

Their website claims they have 34,306 people actively attacking with their tool at this time. The organizers, using the email "info@virtualjihad.net", claim to be reachable via MSN, GoogleTalk, or Skype as well as email.

New Drug sites avoid Visa and MasterCard, Sell Hydrocodone

Those who research Pharmaceutical spam have learned that there are basically two major classes of drugs. Those which the Feds care about stopping (Controlled substances monitored by the DEA) and those the Feds are happy to ignore, and which they call dismissingly "Lifestyle Drugs".

Its quite frustrating in light of the fact that, as Microsoft pointed out recently in their semi-annual report on Internet safety, 97% of the email on the Internet is spam, and HALF of that email is pharmaceutical spam. For someone to decide that its not worth investigating lifestyle drugs (by which they mean Viagra, Cialis, and other sexual-experience related drugs) as vigorously as we investigate "Controlled Substances" has lead to our current status on the Internet as a world flooded with absolutely uncontrolled drug spam.

Nevertheless, knowing that there is a two-tiered system of investigation related to pharmaceutical spam, we've all learned that the way to get action is to point out sites that are selling things that are on the Class I, Class II, Class III, or Class IV Controlled Substance List.

Side Note - if you are looking for a Computer Forensics Research program interested in making an impact on pharmaceutical spam, that has as partners in its "Computer Science/Justice Science Working Group" forensic criminologists with their own Gas Chromotography Mass Spectrometer (GS/MS), and faculty and grad students trained in its use, please look no further than the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

That's one of the two reasons why this new spam cluster is especially interesting to me. We have more than 1450 spam emails in the UAB Spam Data Mine during March and another 1,069 so far during April that contain the word "Hydrocodone" in either the body or the subject. The subject line in today's case actually says "Hydrocodone For You", and pointed to a pharmacy site here:

http://show-advanced-individual.com/

which leads with Hydrocodone, Vicodin, Phentermine, Ambien, Valium, and Levitra. They have quite a few alternate payment methods, but most notably they do NOT accept Visa or Mastercard:

By accepting electronic checks, direct bank transfers, and Western Union payments, these dealers in fake drugs can move their money even faster than they move their drugs. The world of money laundering possibilities opens wide once you get Visa and MasterCard off the option list. That should also make it pretty clear to the potential buyers. This vendor wants to move your money Quickly, Untraceably, and most importantly Irreversibly. They want to make sure they get your money NOW, even though you may (or may not) get your drugs later, and that even if you do NOT got your drugs, there is no way your going to get your money back, or even figure out where your money went.

This particular domain was registered on March 20th via XIN NET Technology.

The IP is at 116.125.56.218 - Hanaro telecom, Korea

This is not a new IP address to us at the UAB Spam Data Mine.

(I'll update those stats with April data once its been caught up...)

The Hotmail address in the whois data is = na506@hotmail.com

The new cluster looks like another Viagra site at first:

but scrolling down, we see it really is selling Hydrocodone and other Class II and Class III Controlled Substances:

As with the first cluster we mention, Visa and MasterCard are conspicuously missing from this site. It now accepts ONLY American Express:

Fortunately, they are concerned about the High Incidence of Fraud. 8-) Haha!
